Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery, also called robot-assisted surgery, is an option for many surgeries at Legacy Orthopaedics. Dr. Riley uses a highly advanced robotic system to help with complex repairs and procedures that would normally require extreme control on his part.

The system that Dr. Riley uses to perform robotic surgery includes an arm with a camera on it, as well as additional arms with surgical tools on them. Dr. Riley sits at a control console and controls the arms on a computer screen. Thanks to the robot’s camera, he has a detailed, magnified 3D view of the surgery site.

The robotic system doesn’t perform any part of your surgery on its own: Every step is entirely under Dr. Riley’s control. Each of the robot’s arms has a wide range of motion and can make complex, precise movements.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery?

Compared with surgeries that aren’t robot-assisted, robotic surgery offers a plethora of benefits for you to consider. In fact, using a robotic system to perform your surgery benefits Dr. Riley as well as you.

Robotic surgery includes these benefits:

  • Higher precision
  • Less post-surgery pain
  • Shorter recovery
  • Less blood loss
  • A more detailed view for your surgeon
  • Better access to the surgical site
  • A greater range of motion for your surgeon
  • Smaller and less noticeable scarring after surgery

Robotic surgery is minimally invasive, meaning the entire procedure is performed through small incisions thanks to the robot’s camera. Each of the one or two incisions is as little as a centimeter in length, so scarring is minimal or nonexistent.

What are my options for robotic surgery?

There are many surgeries that Dr. Riley can perform using his robotic surgery system at Legacy Orthopaedics. Robotic surgery may or may not be an option in your case, as determined by Dr. Riley during the consultation and planning process.

Dr. Riley might use robotic surgery for these two examples and other surgeries:

Knee replacement surgery

In knee replacement surgery, Dr. Riley removes damaged bone and cartilage from a faulty knee joint and replaces them with artificial metal and plastic components.

Hip replacement surgery

During hip replacement surgery, Dr. Riley replaces portions of the ball-and-socket joint damaged by arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other conditions and replaces them with artificial implants.
